What is a Shunt in Electronics?


This paper mainly studies shunt resistance, its main purpose is to measure current.  However, the term shunt has a broader meaning in electronics than this.  A shunt is a component in a circuit that redirects current to another part.  Application areas are quite different.  For some applications, electronic devices other than resistors may be used.  Several examples are given to illustrate the diversity of diverters.  
 
Protect the circuit from overvoltage  
 
One way to protect the circuit from high voltages is to use a crowbar circuit.  When the voltage is too high, the device will short-circuit.  This causes the current to flow parallel to the circuit.  This immediately causes the voltage in the circuit to drop.  High current through the shunt should trigger a circuit breaker or fuse.  
 
Bypass defective devices  
 
When a component in a series circuit fails, it breaks the entire circuit.  A shunt can be used to overcome this problem.  A higher voltage due to a fault will cause the shunt to short-circuit.  Electricity will be transmitted around the defective component.  A good example is the Christmas lights.  
 
Bypass noise  
 
Shunts with capacitors are sometimes used in circuits where high-frequency noise is a problem.  The capacitor redirects noise to the ground before unwanted signals reach the circuit elements.
